I would say Liberace is #2 on this list. Although he did file lawsuits (and won) against magazines for reporting that he was gay, Liberace didn't ruin many lives and he didn't persecute his own kind. After the lawsuits in the 1970s, Liberace just sort of faded away until he passed away. He claimed to be straight but didn't attack people he didn't know.
The # 1 closet case, in my opinion, is Roy Cohn. Advisor to Donald Trump and Senator Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn lead the lavender scare in the 1950s and 1960s seeking out, threatening and blackmailing gay and lesbian government employees. He'd be furious that anyone would even suggest he was gay, but he never answered any questions about his own personal life. He targeted and outed gays and lesbians. Yet, he loved to party at STUDIO 54. Roy Cohn showed the nation live on television that it's okay to harass and threaten members of the LGBT community, then he'd party at gay night clubs. Roy Cohn is the prototype for Aaron Schock, Houston City Councilman Michael Berry and Representative Mark Foley.

You really do never know about these things. In the past 2 years,3 people very close to me have come out after living ostensibly heterosexual lives for decades..My brother-in-law,husband to my late sister(35 years of marriage,2 kids),his male best friend(38 years of marriage,4 kids),and a close female friend(30 years of marriage,1 kid). I’ve completely stopped taking any relationship at face-value as a result. And it seems almost everyone I know of the younger generation identifies as sexually fluid in some way.2 nieces for a start. And too many co-workers to mention.
I live in a relatively conservative part of Canada, hardly a liberal bastion of permissiveness. So unless I’m some wild statistical anomaly,it would appear that while I was sleeping there has been a major paradigm shift.
That celebrities in swinging Hollywood would be gay or bisexual behind the scenes should hardly come as a shock. That we have so few confirmed cases is what is most telling.

I once had a boyfriend who had been a very successful underwear model. He then tried a career as a screenwriter. It didn't go far (he was a terrible writer, he got meetings because of his looks) but he did have lunch a few times with Paul Newman, who acted as though he were interested in my ex's scripts, but the ex says Newman was totally coming on to him. He didn't bite though -- he had just broken up with another (lesser) star and didn't want to deal with a closeted actor again -- and, this was later in Newman's career. He still looked great, but not like he did when he was 35.

I grew up in LA and the boy next door's mom knew in the early 60s that Rock Hudson was gay. She had a rich sister that went to some country club where everybody knew everything about everybody. It was probably filled with the parents of future dataloungers. Also, for some reason, as a child I had pretty good gaydar. I knew without being told that Raymond Burr was gay and also Robert Reed. I'd be surprised if Jimmy Cagney was gay, if only because he's in one of my favorite Old Hollywood gossip items: once on the same train as Merle Oberon, the two hooked up until Merle said mid-act "I can't believe I'm fucking JAMES CAGNEY!" loud enough that he was sure others could hear it. He deflated and left.
The gossip item shows up in a more tasteful form in this review of a Cagney bio from 1998:
[quote]There are no revelations of a closeted life here, though McCabe allows that Noel Coward probable wrote "Mad About the Boy" in homage to Cagney. McCabe also insists on Cagney's fidelity to Frances Willard "Willie" Cagney, James' first and only wife. After being lured into a train berth with a nude and adoring Merle Oberon, Cagney abruptly extricated himself when the great beauty cried out in joy.

Tom Jones talks about Elvis singing to him in the shower.
TJ: Maybe he was checking me out - I don't know. But I closed the door and finished in the shower and then I stepped out to towel down in the main part of the bathroom - only to find that Elvis was still there and that, moreover, he had clearly taken advantage of his time alone to avail himself of the facilities and take a dump in the toilet. He was wearing, on this particular evening, a North Beach leather suit. A lot of us had them at that time - natural leather with a lot of give in it, and stitching all along the edges. But unlined, so a bit of a struggle to put on. Therefore, when I emerged from the shower, the exact sight that greeted me was of Elvis, leaning against the sink, washing his hands, with his back to me and with his leather North Beach trousers and his underwear still around his ankles. .

A friend of mine told me something about James Cagney. The friend was an actor and director. He had managed a Holiday Inn in a Boston suburb at one time. Cagney was in his 50s or 60s at this time and lived on Martha's Vineyard. The friend said every year Cagney would check into the motel for a few days with another guy the same age. Everybody assumed it was a relationship. I guess because Cagney was married and why would he not have his friend visit him at home, or vice-versa? Or they picked up on the vibes. Maybe only one bed was unmade. lol. I don't remember.
It was rumored that he and Noel Coward liked each other, and Coward wrote Mad About The Boy about Cagney. But I also read a rumor about Merle Oberon and Cagney, so he may have been bi.
Coming from the New England area, I heard a lot of rumors, even when I was in high school. Apparently a lot of actors felt they could get together with more freedom on the Cape or in Maine, and when they were doing summer stock. One of my friends' dads referred to Raymond Burr as gay, I also heard that Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors were gay, and Van Johnson. A girl I knew worked summers in Dunfey's Hyannis (hotel) and a lot of rumors about visiting celebs were always swirling around there. My family went on vacation in Ogunquit (where the summer playhouse is) and sometimes you'd hear about a celeb renting a house and having gay parties.
Spencer Tracy - I used to wonder if he was gay, for various reasons (gayday mainly) but is Scottie Bowers the only proof? He had a lot of serious affairs with women, not just Hepburn but also Loretta Young, and he pursued Joan Fontaine, Gene Tierney, and Grace Kelly.

[quote]I would say Liberace is #2 on this list.
Are you headless? Liberace fooled nobody, except maybe a few simple-minded fraus, even during the height of his career in the 1950s. There's a difference between trying to fool people, with his lawsuit against Confidential magazine and his "watermelon diet" when he was dying of AIDS, and actually fooling them.

Former Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe wrote about an interesting encounter with Arafat in his memoir:
“When Arafat arrived at the restaurant, Hani had him sit right next to me. We talked about what was happening in the Middle East and Arafat had all kinds of questions about U.S. politics and of course about Bill Clinton. The dinner soon became somehow comical for me. Arafat would get very animated when he spoke and every time he was making a point, he would lean over and rub my leg under the table. He'd be saying something to the whole table full of people and then would look right at me, emphasizing a point, and rub up and down my leg....Finally it was time to go and as we stood up to shake hands Arafat laid a big ole wet kiss right on my lips. I wasn't ready for that one.”

I don't believe that. If the Wynns were happily married, they wouldn't have gone along with it. TPTB could easily have found an unrelated woman to join Johnson in matrimony.

[quote]But didn't Liberace win the lawsuit?
Liberace settled with Confidential in 1957. He did win a libel lawsuit against the London Daily Mirror in 1959 for running a column insinuating that he was gay at a time when being openly gay in England was illegal.
None of which constitutes "fooling the world." He was a huge pansy and everyone knew it.

[quote]And they let him have a high flying career?
Who the hell are "they"? Liberace's peak success was in the 1950s, when homosexuality was barely talked about, including in the press. Liberace claimed that skater Sonja Henie was the love of his life (but, sadly, she married someone else), and he was making a lot of money for a lot of people. He never came out, even late in his career when he was wearing sequined costumes that would embarrass a Las Vegas showgirl, because he was afraid of losing his adoring female fans, who by then didn't give a fuck whether he was gay or not. End of story.

^^^thanks R347. Like you said, in context that is a crazy conversation.
The way she said, “I’m particular, that’s all” sent me. It’s such a pity the Church and her grifty family had such a hold on her that she felt the need to defend herself so vehemently about her relationship with Robyn. That’s not even getting into the general lesbiphobia of the time (yes, it did exist). 23 was so young an age to be dealing with all that she did, and it’s awful to think that she had to cope with shaming about the real love she felt for a woman on top of all that.
Whitney interviews never get old. There’ll never be another Nippy.

by Anonymous | reply 350 | October 12, 2020 1:39 AM |
Can you blame them? Even Robyn minimized their romance in her book, to the point that the most desperate straightwashers tried to argue that "child" Whitney was groomed by "adult" Robyn (they are only something like a year and a half apart in age), and that their sexual relationship was at best experimentation. But Robyn tells on herself when she details how Whitney fired a dancer who was spending time with Robyn, and slapped Robyn over the "betrayal."

The guys who are really successful at fooling the world are the ones that are not conventionally attractive at all, to the extent that nobody thinks about in a sexual way at all.
Somebody like Dom DeLuise. He was pretty queeny in his mannerisms, but he was married with kids, and he was morbidly obese, so nobody wanted to think about him fucking anything, be it male or female, and he managed to slip under the radar of most people.
Same with Louie Anderson, except people found out because he got blackmailed and had to go to the cops and it went public. If that hadn't happened, who would have even bothered to care?
Billy Preston too. He wasn't an unattractive guy, but he was no heartthrob either. He seemed sort of asexual, if anything. Again, if there hadn't been that scandal with the Mexican day laborer, I doubt anybody would have given it a second thought.
I admit to being surprised when Clive Davis came out as bi. Another one you just don't want to think about having sex with anybody.

Has Travolta taken a peek outside his closet lately? I remember his antics with porn daddy Paul Barresi in the steamroom at the Beverly Hills Health Club around the time Travolta was making "Perfect" there.
