Peak Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme enters a martial arts tournament... This alone will be the reason for many to check out Bloodsport if they haven't already. The debut lead role for the iconic action star perfectly showcases his abilities, which would propel him to be one of the most recognizable action stars of all time. It's low-budget but slick, and those looking for martial arts action won't be disappointed with the many fight scenes in Bloodsport.

9 Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987)

Two undercover DEA agents, Donna and Taryn, intercept a delivery of diamonds intended for the vicious drug lord, Seth Romero, on a private Hawaiian island. Aided by other operatives from "The Agency" Donna and Taryn, fight for their lives in the lush landscape of Hawaii.

Triple-B Cinema

Andy Sidaris was a showman who coined the term 'Triple-B' cinema. Under this label, he made a slew of movies, most almost identical to each other, emphasizing deadly female secret agents, explosions, and pristine location work. Hard Ticket to Hawaii is easily his best work, finding cult status thanks to absurd scenes such as death by frisbee, an exploding blow-up doll decoy, and taking out a giant snake with a rocket launcher. Putting aside the entertaining, silly moments, the movie is unapologetically over-the-top in every aspect, and the cast is so wonderfully eccentric it is hard not to be charmed by them.

Jaguar Paw, a young man from a peaceful Mayan village, is abducted by a ruthless tribe looking for sacrifices for the sun god. Jaguar Paw is taken hostage, but before his abduction, he manages to hide away his pregnant wife and son. When he is given the chance to run, hunted for entertainment by the tribe that abducted him, he tries to run to his wife while fighting off the chasing hunters.

One Long Chase

Intense from the beginning, Apocalypto offers an emotionally fueled run for survival across the jungle. The bulk of the movie is a single chase. Still, the extreme violence, sharp visual direction, and clever use of exposition to tell the story of what pushes Jaguar Paw to survive give the action movie depth. This one does not let up, and heavy-action movie fans need to check out this Mel Gibson-directed, chaotic, immersive experience.

Police lieutenant Ethan Bishop has been assigned to watch over the decommission of a Police station in crime-riddled Los Angeles. Joined by a few remaining staff members and two convicts being temporarily held, the group becomes unlikely allies, with the precinct coming under attack by a vicious gang looking for revenge for the death of their leader.

John Carpenter's Gritty Crime Thriller

John Carpenter may be the unrivaled king of horror, defining the modern slasher genre with 1978's Halloween and creating some of the most recognizable characters the genre has ever seen. However, his work in other genres carries the same gritty and dark charm, with Assault on Precinct 13 offering the perfect blend of action and exploitation. The crime-thriller stays consistently engaging, as it follows the events over a night of a group trying to survive a never-ending onslaught. Like every John Carpenter production, he brings the best out of his cast and offers a perfect score to accompany the chaos.

Highlighting '90s Action

The '90s was an interesting era for lower-budget action movies, with many companies pushing out movies and trying to create the next action hero. This resulted in many films and actors garnering cult followings but did not pierce the mainstream. Gary Daniels is a prime example of this, and his work with the legendary action studio PM Entertainment resulted in some of the best of the decade. The plot may be rather cookie-cutter, but Daniels's stunt work and presence here is peak 90s machismo. Guns, martial arts, explosions, people falling from railings: Recoil will scratch that itch for a good cheesy 90s action movie.

An Exciting South Korean Crime Thriller

A list of best action movies would be amiss without including a South Korean movie, with the country producing some of the best in the modern era. The blend of dark humor and hard-hitting action instantly found a fan base among action-comedy fans. The movie's twist on the 'odd couple' cop thriller was also a perfect highlight for veteran actor Ma Dong-seok (aka Don Lee) as the powerful crime boss Jang Dong-su. The role is so memorable that the planned American remake by Paramount and Sylvester Stalone's Balboa Productions is set to star the Korean superstar; all the more reason to watch the original beforehand.

4 Yes, Madam (1985)

✕ Remove Ads

After Inspector Ng's (Michelle Yeo) friend is murdered, it leads her to investigate the killers and try to procure a stolen microfilm that will help shed light on the case. She teams up with skilled British officer Carrie Morris (Cynthia Rothrock) after they originally bash heads over their approach to exacting justice. Meanwhile, a group of petty thieves who have happened upon the microfilm find themselves trying to evade both the police and gangsters.

Female Action Renaissance in Hong Kong

Yes, Madam offered a familiar Hong Kong action by blending action and comedy, all wrapped up in a crime caper plot. However, the movie stands out in its cast, with the production attributed to playing an integral role in the female lead action movies coming out of Hong Kong. The star power here is undeniable, with Michelle Yeoh going on to a remarkable career; the first Asian actor to win Best Actor for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Rothrock's status in the action genre is also unrivaled, seeing great success both in Hong Kong and America and donning the cover of countless martial arts magazines for her skill outside the screen. The movie would become part of the popular "In the Line of Duty" series, and seeing the two at the start of their careers is a true treat for fans of both.

Waking up in a pod, a man known as Henry is thrust into a world where he must survive. He is stripped of his memories beyond his desire to save the woman who awakened him and faces an entire army of people who want him dead. The story slowly unravels as he is met with different tasks by a mysterious man and his constant push toward discovering why his partner was taken away from him.

POV Parkour

If you are the type who gets dizzy easily, you may want to avoid this one, but those who like POV movies will find that Hardcore Henry offers up non-stop chaos and over-the-top violence in an innovative and explosive way. The kill count here is ridiculous, with almost all of them coming stylishly from Henry, the one-man army. The plot is also intriguing enough to have the viewer invested in what happens, with plenty of twists and turns.

2 Blood and Steel (1990)

After his sister's murder, Mark begins to look into who would have had reason to kill her. However, his investigations soon unmask a hidden drug ring backed by kung-fu experts. Now, Mark must fight through a gauntlet of martial artists to avenge his sister and save his small town from the vicious criminal outfit.

Homegrown Action

Bleeding Skull has long been committed to finding low-budget gems and giving them a deserved remaster, and Mark Swetland's Blood and Steel is an undeniable treasure. Directed and starring Swetland, who carries his admiration of Bruce Lee into every scene, the action is well choreographed, and the story is enjoyably gritty. The quality may be z-grade with a shot-on-video approach by an amateur filmmaker, but one of the movie's most charming elements is how passionate Swetland is about the action genre. The movie will certainly bring many back to emulating their favorite scenes; it is nostalgic but has some seriously cool action sequences to back it up.

One of the Longest Action Sequences Committed to the Screen

Japanese provocateur/madman Takashi Miike has a long career of pushing boundaries in many different genres, so the director's promise of a massive action scene instantly became a promising prospect. What audiences got was 45 minutes of chaos that comprised the latter half of 13 Assassins, seeing an army of 200 slowly slaughtered under various traps and one-on-one fights. It is a spectacle but masterfully executed and backed by a strong script that gives each assassin's fight meaning, an emotional journey reminiscent of an Akira Kurosawa movie, whom Miike drew inspiration from when making 13 Assassins.
